Day 74 – Message in a Bottle

Day 74 - Message in a Bottle - Star Trek 365 by Lee Sargent

Message in a Bottle

So for the next week I’m just doing randomly selected episodes (there’s a couple of random Trek generators online – none for Enterprise though except one that connects directly to Netflix).

I don’t know why I didn’t show the Mark II EMH, I guess I’ve drawn him before and I wanted to draw some Romulans.  I actually think the Robert Picardo likeness isn’t too shabby actually.  This was a fun episode so I’m happy this came up randomly.

Day 73 – Sir, he’s dead already

Day 73 - Sir, he's dead already - star trek 365 by Lee Sargent 2018

Sir, he’s dead already

I did this sequence in 2014 and I wanted to revisit it to see if my approach would have changed.  I purposely didn’t go back and check it out and just drew it the way I would today.  It’s pretty much spot on for how I did it back then – the framing of the scene in my head with how I draw pretty much repositions everyone to get the impact of the scene.

For me I think there are a handful of scenes sprinkled throughout the Star Trek franchise that are just so unbelieveably brilliant and powerful that they are elevated above everything else.  This is one such scene, this whole ending is probably a candidate but this is mesmerising stuff.

On the one hand you have Shatner delivering his heart out, completely committed to the scene and then you have DeForest Kelley and James Doohan matching him all the way.  The physicality of the sequence and the delivery of these crushing lines as McCoy first grabs him knowing full well that his next move is to save Spock no matter what and then the bluntness that Scotty has to deliver in pure desperation.

It’s truly beautiful and this scribble doesn’t do it justice.

Day 72 – In a Mirror, Darkly

Day 72 - In a Mirror, Darkly - Star Trek 365 by Lee Sargent 2018

In a Mirror, Darkly

Since I was in the Mirror Universe I figured why not visit with the appropriated Defiant crew.

I did enjoy seeing the effort they went to in these episodes to retain the Original Series look and feel.  The Gorn left a lot to be desired but overall I loved seeing this and I expect the cast had a great time filming it.

Day 71 – Dahar master Kang

Day 71 - Dahar master Kang

Dahar master Kang

The final in my set of three TOS Klingon sketch cards.

When I set out to draw them I just wanted to make it clear who was who and I’m happy with the end result as I think you can tell which is which.  At some point in the future, I might try and do the three of them cured of the augment disease as they appear in DS9.

I really loved how they used William Campbell for Koloth, he was inspired recasting and wonderful as Kirk’s counterpart in The Trouble With Tribbles.  I really wish we could have seen more of him in TOS (and Kang and Kor).

Part of a set of three.

I love the original Klingons and I love it, even more, how DS9 brought them back.  It was wonderful of them to include them.  My goal here was to make sure you could tell what Klingon is being featured rather than just generic TOS Klingons.

I do also appreciate Worf’s sash even more from season one TNG matching the ones worn by Kor and Kang.

This will be available in a three card set.

Actually, MU Chekov is maybe creepier than MU Sulu.

I do enjoy overdoing his hair though 😀

The full set of cards should be up on Etsy now (unless they’re already gone)

Possibly the biggest transformation in the episode Nichelle Nichols must have had a ball playing goodUhura pretending to be bad ass Uhura.

I did like in Enterprise how they made Tucker deformed due to the warp engines, I guess the budget really only stretched to Spock and Kirk getting new uniforms but I do think the engineers would cop a lot of radiation!
