Day 93 – a damn illegal thing

Day 93 - a damn illegal thing - star trek 365 by Lee Sargent 2018

How can you be deaf with ears like that?

I love Star Trek III The Search for Spock, I think it’s possibly my favourite of all the films.  It has so much in it, such a wonderful soundtrack and of course a great villain.  I struggle to understand why some people place it in the “odd number = bad” garbage.

Anyway, I love this whole sequence with poor Dr McCoy struggling with Spock’s katra in his head as he instinctively tries to make his way back to the Genesis planet.  I think if they were doing this today the large ear fellow might’ve been a Ferengi.

Day 92 – Magic Carpet Ride

Day 92 - Magic Carpet Ride - star trek 365 by Lee Sargent 2018

Rock n Roll

It’s kind of awesome that Geordi and Riker got to be part of one of the biggest events in the Federation’s history.  I mean that’s insanely important and there they are making the first human jump to warp speed.

I watched First Contact the other day whilst working on the big Borg 100 piece – I draw all the Borg directly and I like them on in the background for inspiration.  One thing struck me is that there was a Klingon Borg which I thought odd because I didn’t think any drones beamed over, only the Queen for some reason.  I can’t imagine them scurrying through the jefferies tubes.

Day 91 – USS Voyager sketch card

Day 91 - USS Voyager sketchcard

USS Voyager

I’ve got a bad case of the man-flu right now that I’m currently fighting with every cold fighting remedy I can get my hands on – I’m hoping by tomorrow I should be back in the world of the living but for now all I can muster is this Voyager sketch card.

Not my finest work but then I’m running a pretty high fever and can’t breathe LOL.

Day 90 – Star Trek IV The Voyage Home poster

Day 90 - Star Trek IV The Voyage Home poster - star trek 365 by Lee Sargent 2018

Star Trek IV The Voyage Home

Whilst I have drawn the first three posters a couple of times before I have never tackled the Star Trek IV poster before and apart from some minor scaling issues it wasn’t too painful.  I always knew the Bounty was going to be painful and I knew Ididn’t quite have the handle on the reds (red can be a really overpowering colour in watercolours so I focused more on reddish oranges and browns).

This was an interesting one too because my understanding is that this isn’t the official film poster, that the one with the title hurtling towards Earth is and this was an additional poster.  This is possibly my favourite so there was very little chance me not going with this one.

So there’s been a lot of questions and some conversation about what I’m going to do with the originals of these – I think that I will probably sell them as a print set and maybe as postcards but I think for the originals I’ll wait for them to be done and then release one a day and give everyone a chance at owning one, rather than one person snapping them up as a set.

I guess I better start brushing up my horse sketching for the Star Trek V poster.

Day 89 – Ensign Lon Suder

Day 89 - Ensign Lon Suder - star trek 365 by Lee Sargent 2018

Most Betazoids can sense other people’s emotions. I can’t even sense my own.

I enjoyed the character of Suder quite a bit, it introduced an interesting element to the Voyager crew and what to do with him considering they couldn’t just ship him off to a rehabilitation centre.  I also appreciate what they ended doing with him, giving him a complete story arc and showing a small piece of continuity in the Voyager ongoing story.

Day 88 – Sir, have you ever served with any Bajoran women?

Day 88 - Sir, have you ever served with any Bajoran women? - star trek 365 by Lee Sargent 2018

You are throwing it all away! All of you!

This week has already gotten away from me so I was drawing this quite late in the day after a complete brain freeze on what to draw.  I just wanted to draw angry Kira and then had this in my head.

I like to imagine she’s arguing about what to order the committee for lunch and they’ve all said Subways and she wants Peri Peri chips because she knows that the subs always get soggy and are never to everyone’s taste.  I mean it’s not canon but I’m pretty convinced.

Day 87 – Perhaps today IS a good day to bake

Day 87 - Perhaps today IS a good day to bake - star trek 365 by Lee Sargent 2018

Perhaps today IS a good day to bake

Worf baking a Tarvokian pound cake was possibly one of the most joyous of occasions for me as I realised what an hilarious character Worf really is.  I didn’t really care for the character all that much before that but his line in The Game just struck me as so deadpan brilliant.  Then I started paying more attention to Worf and realised that this character is a true comic gem, whilst never dropping to the realms of buffoon.

It was one of the earliest Star Trek 365 style drawings of him with his cake and so I celebrate that once again today.

This was actually designed specifically to go on a t-shirt (which I proudly bought myself yesterday).

You can buy your very own on my Threadless store.

Day 86 – The Naked Time

The Naked Time

I’ve only done this one to get that sweet sweet “naked” SEO keyword traffic… boy are you guys going to be disappointed.

I’m not sure there’s any more enduring an image of Sulu than him running around the decks of the Enterprise swashbuckling.  I feel like I got the crazy Sulu face done too 🙂

Day 85 – George, Gracie and Spock – Happy Birthday to Leonard Nimoy

Day 85 - George, Gracie and Spock - Happy Birthday to Leonard Nimoy

George, Gracie and Spock – Happy Birthday to Leonard Nimoy

So yesterday’s Spock was going to be my birthday tribute to Leonard Nimoy but then this worked out so much better.  A wonderful scene in Star Trek The Voyage Home and Spock at his finest.  Respecting the rights of animals rather than arrogantly assuming they’d be down with coming to the future.  I think Star Trek IV gets a bad rep from me because it is too light and too “popular” but it’s a beautiful film carefully crafted by the late Leonard Nimoy and Ilove watching it every time I do sit down to do so.

Thank you Leonard Nimoy.

Day 84 – Amok Time

Day 84 - Amok Time - star trek 365 by Lee Sargent 2018

Amok Time

I got my days mixed up in all the craziness of late and thought for some reason that today was Leonard Nimoy’s birthday when in actual fact I was right in the first place and it’s tomorrow. So I expect to see a bit of a double up of Spock (not the worst thing in the world).

I wanted to have some fun with Spock weilding a lirpa so I checked out a bunch of similar reference shots to give him this deadly look.

Amok Time is such an amazing episode and as one of my patrons over on Patreon mentioned, it’s one of the TOS episodes that most benefitted from the updated CGI as the whole episode looks fantastic with Vulcan in all her glory.
