Day 35 – Mary Chieffo as Klingon Battle Deck Commander L’Rell by Roberto Q. Garza

Day 35 - Mary Chieffo as Klingon Battle Deck Commander L’Rell by Roberto Q. Garza

I was born in Lubbock and raised in Pettit Texas (about 15 miles northwest of Levelland) and attended school in Levelland Texas. I found that I could draw at an early age. At first, I would draw comic book characters and hot rods. When I was little, my mom would get mad because I would get new calendars and draw on the unprinted sides of them. Large blank paper was not safe around our house!

Throughout school, I did not draw as much, just small drawings. While I attended High school, my High school art teacher introduced me to the Renaissance artists, DaVinci and Michelangelo, which to this day have given me much inspiration. I entered my first art show 10 years ago, I did not sell any of the work, but I did get many great comments about my work. To me that (at the time) was the greatest feeling. I have shown my art steadily since then and have shown many times during the First Friday Art trail in Lubbock Texas.

My artwork is pencil, colored pencil, and watercolor.

My first love is to do biblical art; the problem is that it does not appeal to many people. The thing is my biblical art is my interpretation of the scriptures and they are rough. One example is my version of the Scourge. It depicts Jesus during the scourge, somewhat reminiscent of Mel Gibson’s Passion of the Christ. When people walk up to it, they are either curious or overwhelmed by it. I try to depict these stories by a more practical, honest, emotional view and while most folks prefer the generic Jesus on the cross painting, devoid of the results of the actual punishment he endured for us. This is not what happened at all.

Couple of years ago I had my first Courtroom Illustrator assignments in which my work been seen on local TV stations and on the national show 20/20. Which brings me to what I am doing lately, I have been drawing pencil portraits of people of pop culture, history and local people and pets. The most recent are the Orville and Star Trek Discovery portraits which I am fan of. Many thanks for reading this
