This was an awesome commission piece request that I carried over into this year and this scene was always going to be a challenge given my predilection towards front facing characters. I was going to only show one side of the corridor but I think it lost the impact of the sequence which is quite powerful. So instead I gritted the teeth and put in some profiles and tried to really capture the scene as is on screen.
Client was happy and that’s the most important thing! He was also kind enough to let me add it to the colouring pages which I’ll do over the next couple of days.
I just realised that we did a Romulan themed picture yesterday so I have Romulans on the brain, how very not logical.
Now after the Bajoran city illustration I did last year I’m really keen to keep exploring this style. This image is not of any specific Romulan city, it could be anywhere on Romulus. Originally I drew the Imperial Senate Building of the Romulan Star Empire but it made the picture way too cluttered and so it will get it’s own piece one of these days coming.
I get the impression that the building on the far right is a landing pad and it is very similar to some Vulcan structures. I saw two types of trees populating the city images I could find and represented both styles here. Also there seemed to be a lot of antenna style structures so I’ve included them as well.
This certainly shouldn’t be taken as canon but it’s my impression and interpretation of Romulan architecture.

Big, fun and full of action, just like the 2009 Star Trek film (I hope). I had to reposition them and change up the sequence of events but this was a heck of a lot of fun to draw. When I finished the pencils I was a little worried that I had bitten off more than I could chew but then once I got down to painting it the pieces all came together and it eventually looked like the platform.
I’m particularly proud of the red plasma globules coming off the beam (although I now realise that they resemble the red matter… but they’re not!).
This one was also perfect to be added as a colouring page which I shall do so sometime over the next couple of days when I get a chance.
The first human warp five starship. I actually really love the NX design, whilst I was initially quite skeptical of the show introducing a retcon Enterprise and was determined not to accept it, I instantly fell in love with it.
It’s an awkward ship to draw because it’s not very forgiving depending on the angle you draw it from and those good angles have all been done in promotional material to death.

The Star Trek The Motion Picture poster is phenomenal, it’s a true work of art that I will never come close to capturing in my style. That said this came up a lot better than I expected and it was actually some fun putting it together.
I did the ink lines first and that was pretty clear this was going to be all in the painting, as it was a pretty empty page. The I used my Winsor & Newton water colour markers to do the main columns of colour. Then painted the black in with one of my standard water colours and let that dry, pressed it flat again and took to it with my prismacolor pencils.
I admittedly cheated on my ethos and used a ruler on those lines.
I then cropped it so it filled the entire frame of the image and there you have it. It’s rough and tumble but I think it has a bit of charm to it.
I had another illustration all ready to go for today and then watching last night’s episode of Star Trek Discovery and I was just really excited to do a drawing from a very recently aired episode.
And what an episode!?!?
I don’t like the Mirror Universe stories, I think the obsession with that universe is something I will never understand though I had to admit I really liked how it was handled in this episode. I love the crew being ordered to look like their counterparts and seeing the behind the scenes activity that goes with changing the look of the ship and crew. I also LOVED the Enterprise reference around the Defiant.
And of course the worst kept secret in the show is confirmed and then we have a death of Whedon proportions.
I have some predictions, I think Stamets will reunite with Dr Culber in another universe now that he can see through time and we know that the spore drive doesn’t go into active use. I hope he’s not replaced by mirror Culber. I also think that Georgiou will appear as the Emperor although I would dearly love to see an ancient Hoshi.
It still troubles me though, if the Discovery returns to the alpha universe and reports back on all of this how is it that Spock at least doesn’t know about it? Surely this isn’t going to be so classified that Starfleet Captains wouldn’t know about it. Also if there are multiple universes which in Star Trek there are, we know this as fact then why the same bloody mirror universe?!?!?
I liked the episode, there are still problems but stuff happened in it. I’m not sure all the stuff that happened was a good idea but again bigger picture I suppose.
Clearly inspired by Spock’s space walk in Star Trek The Motion Picture, as much as I don’t completely concede the logic, it is a cool sequence, shot beautifully and I think one of Michael’s more likeable scenes.
I’ve said it elsewhere but I think I need to wait to see all of Star Trek Discovery before passing real judgement on the show, without context I think the show is a little misguided and lacking in hope but all of this could be rectified through the greater story arc. So criticisms and nit picks aside seeing Star Trek back on television and evolving is wonderful and I look forward to this coming half season to see where they go.
Fortunately Tilly and Stamets are probably just about likeable enough to make up for everyone else anyway LOL.
I saw the first episode of Enterprise on a media preview tape lent to me with unfinished special effects with a group of friends who were not interested (they were more excited about the Buffy Season Five… or Six whenever she came back from the dead). The song threw me out, I hated it but I loved the montage. I’d seen the ad for Enterprise using Wherever You Will Go and was really disappointed they didn’t use it for the show:
But in fairness I kind of love that horrible song now and I think Broken Bow was a really great introduction though I don’t think there are many who would argue for the temporal cold war. There are several scenes that really stand out to me in this, especially the sequence where Trip is getting annoyed by the Lorillian mother weaning her child.
But I think the fact that they completed their mission and returned Klaang to the Klingon Empire is noteworthy and I love that shot of the four of them though that red background was tempting to ignore.
There are a couple of scenes that sum up the episode Caretaker for me, one of which is of course depicted above, as the Maquis and Starfleet confront the Caretaker together, it’s unmistakeably this episode. One of the other scene I didn’t choose though it is probably my favourite is at the end of the episode when Captain Janeway orders them to head for home. The look that Kate Mulgrew has on her face in the sequence is everything.
A bit of creative licensing with the scene above, I removed the second chair that Chakotay sits in just because it was going to mess with my composition. I really love this episode, I’m not sure where Star Trek pilot episodes get a bad reputation, they are for the most part really solid shows despite requiring a little polish around the edges.
I love the burden they place on Janeway’s shoulders, she’s the one who strands them because it’s the right thing to do. I also love the trope of the simulation by the hugely advanced alien species that plays out in this episode. I struggled with Voyager during its first run, I found it frustrating that they had to reset every episode but I fell in love with the characters in my second run through and that has only deepened with every rewatch.
The response to the question of what is the defining moment in the Star Trek Deep Space Nine pilot episode Emissary was loud and clear “It is not linear.” Everyone was right of course, this is the defining moment of DS9 and Sisko’s realisation that he must move on and embrace his new path. Before this he could barely be in the same room with Captain Picard who he knew was just as much of a victim of Wolf 359. His second conversation with Picard much more civil, he is a man who has started on the road to healing, much like Bajor and the Bajoran people who have lost so much and need to heal.
This is the story of Deep Space Nine and it’s a wonderfully rich one.
The challenge with tackling these kind of scenes is a very valid fear of not being able to do it justice in my style. This is a weighty scene and I honestly felt reverent when drawing Jennifer, in no way wishing to make light of the scene and its importance. I usually play music whilst I illustrate but I didn’t with this one, probably a little silly but still.
